The world of penny stocks is an exciting one-so much profit potential. However, it can also be one filled with horror. Deciding where to buy penny stocks online is as much apart of your success as picking the right stocks to load up on.

I think one of the worst mistakes an investor can make is opening an account with the wrong stock broker. There are so many fly-by-night establishments and many more unknown ones.

For my money, it's worth giving up a little profit for security. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is, right? Many online stock brokers that aren't worth a hill of beans promise the moon and deliver nothing.

But fear not, it's very easy to trade penny stocks online and make money. I know, because I've done it many times. And I'm still searching for something to do that's more fun and rewarding.

Your first step is to make a list of potential online stock brokers. Keep this list to 10-15 places and have one rule in mind: they must be somewhat known and visible. Perhaps you've seen them advertise on CNBC or in your favorite financial publication for ages.

Scottrade is an example. Put them somewhere on your list. They are well-known and they may be a match.

Once you have your list, start to compare fees and options. What's important to you? If you're going to take a lot of sub $1 penny stocks, pay attention to special fees. For those trading in the $1 - $5 range, those usually won't apply.

Look for reviews and ask those in your daily life if they've used any of them. Don't get suckered by "unbelievable" fees. There's more than enough profit in penny stocks. Go with a online stock broker you can trust and sleep well at night.
